Travel to Three Gorges Dam

When I visited the Three Gorges Dam, I was completely amazed at the scale of things. The Three Gorges Dam is almost as impressive as the Great Wall of China! The Three Gorges dam is very impressive and was like nothing else that I saw in China. On my visit to the dam I was bombarded with lots of information about the construction of the dam. I was also told that it’s the largest hydroelectric power dam in the world and the scale of it can be very difficult to get your head around.

I was amazed at how big the dam actually was, It is huge!. The scale of it is like nothing else on the planet. I had already seen other hydroelectric dams in other countries, but nothing compares to this one. You can literally hear the turbines spinning and generating power.

Near to the dam is a large building which contains lots of information about how the dam was constructed. My children were fascinated by the small scale working models, these are also interesting for adults. I was able to understand a little bit about how the dam works by studying the models. I don’t speak Chinese but this didn’t affect my trip to visit the dam. Actually, I was able to hire an English speeking guide which helped me to understand a lot about the dam.

I was impressed with the number of viewing platforms which were available. These are all well thought out and give you a good view of the dam. I could see for miles from these platforms, although, I imagine if you visit on an overcast day it might not be so impressive.

I also found the reservoir is beautiful to look at. It just seems to extend on forever and meets the sky. It’s a very picturesque place to visit and a perfect photo opportunity.

Ship Locks

One of the first things that I noticed when visiting the Three Gorges Dam were the ship locks. These are very impressive and were designed to make transport by ship as easy as possible. I went on a Yangtze River Cruise which navigates these ship locks. I found it fascinating to watch dozens of huge car transporters using these ship locks every day.

I also noticed that there is a ship lift which is currently being constructed. When complete this will make it even quicker for ships to navigate through the dam. I will have to return for a second visit when the ship lift is completed. I was also pleasantly surprised with the look round the gift shop. There were a lot of authentic Chinese gifts available for purchase.
