Nanjing Xuanwu Lake

A stone's throw away from the Nanjing Railway Station, in very close proximity to the Ji Ming Temple, is Xuanwu Lake, a protected lake in the north-eastern area of China's eastern coastal province of Jiangsu, with the actual lake itself located in Jiangsu's capital city of Nanjing.

The Xuanwu Lake enjoys a history that can be traced back a very long way, to the Pre-Qin period and the name of the lake has been changed a number of times over the course of its history.

Nanjing Xuanwu Lake

The significance of the Xuanwu Lake lies in the fact that it forms part of a trio of famous Nanjing lakes and it is so-named because of the legend attached to it, which goes that black dragon was spotted in the lake.

Highlights

Apart from the fact that Xuanwu Lake is a protected area, what makes it special is the presence of a number of little islets littered across the lake, five of them to be exact, in the form of Ying Isle, Cui Isle, Ling Isle, Huan Isle and Liang Isle.

Huan Isle houses the Nuona Tower, which radiates a serenity that is unmatched for miles in all directions, while Ying Isle offers enjoyment of the Lotus Garden, with cherry blossoms calling Ying Isle home and the Zhongshang Mountain towering over the lake itself.

The annual Grand Trade Exhibition of Chrysanthemums is takes place on the Lian Isle, which was the earliest of the five isled to be developed, so naturally it attracts more than its fair share of visitors.

Since the Lake is a naturally occurring feature with the kind of beauty that is to be enjoyed by all who are drawn to it, there are no entry fees.
