Nanjing Folk Museum

Situated in the Chinese Province of Jiangsu, within the borders of the Zhongshan Gate, the Nanjing Museum covers a surface area of approximately 6.8 hectares, serving as yet another one of the many attractions the city of Nanjing has to offer.

Nanjing Museum is definitely one of the bigger museums in China and the name "Gan Family Residence" may be used in reference to the Nanjing Museum, simply because it is indeed the former house of the famous Qing Dynasty student, Ganxi.

Nanjing Folk Museum

There is a lot to see and experience at the Nanjing Folk Museum, with display rooms running just over the 300 mark, which is quite remarkable if one thinks of the fact that this was indeed the residence of a family.

Some of the furniture and relics from times gone by have been preserved and a good job is done of demonstrating the daily lives of the ways of the locals and one can enjoy watching some of the live craftsmen at work, who do a great job in demonstrating the skill that goes into making some of the ornaments and other works of art, the way it was done back in the days of their forefathers.

Highlights

The in-house multimedia tourist guide system will help visitors make sense of all the attractions to see, like the two-storey, palace-like Basic Hall, displaying all the historical relics and the three-storey Art Exhibition Hall.

Basic Hall: The Basic Hall was constructed in an ancient Liao period style, which accounts for its palace-like architecture and it hosts a trio of specialized exhibition divisions, namely the Jiangsu Archaeological Achievements Exhibition, the Chinese History, People & Culture Very Fine Display as well as the Civilization Panorama.

Art Exhibition Hall: The Art Exhibition Hall, which is situated westwards of the Basic Hall, bears 11 divisions, namely the Treasure Hall, the Folklore Hall, the Modern Arts Hall, the Lacquer Ware Hall, the Bronze Ware Hall, the Painting Hall, the Jade Article Hall, the Calligraphy & Painting Hall, the Pottery Ware Hall, the Embroidery Hall as well as the Porcelain Ware Hall, offering a stunning collection of some masterpiece paintings as well as around 30 000 calligraphic pieces.

The Museum also offers subject lectures that are specially geared towards the history and significance of some of the relics housed in the Museum, so one can come away with some useful knowledge in addition to their sightseeing.

How to Get There

Tourist busses 1, 2 and 5 will get you right to the Nanjing Folk Museum.
