Quyuan Temple

Quyuan Temple Located in Xiangjiaping 1.5 km from the Yangtze River’s northern bank, Quyuan Temple (also called Qingliegongci) built to commemorate Quyuan.

Quyuan was, a poet in Spring and Autumn period (BC340 – BC278) drowned himself in the Miluo river when his country was defeated. Legend said that a huge divine fish carried his body back to his hometown after he died.

Quyuan Temple was originally built in Tang dynasty (820 AD) and was moved to north of city because of three gorges dam project. It has a archway, main hall and other small buildings. A bronze statue stands in the middle yard of the temple. Quyuan’s main poetic works “Lisao”, “Tianwen”, “Jiuge”, “Jiuzhang” etc. are inscribed on the steles of the corridor, and visitors can also see the works of some other famous poets from different Chinese dynasties.

The Chinese traditional festival- “Dragon Boat festival” is held to commemorate this great person — Quyuan.
