Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge

Commonly known as the Wuhan First Yangtze Bridge, the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge is a double-tier rail and road bridge, spanning the width of the Yangtze River in Central China's Hubai Province, centrally located in the provincial capital town of Wuhan, and it was completed in 1957.

The significance of the "First Bridge of the Yangtze" is indeed the fact that it was the very first railway-highway bridge over the mighty Yangtze River, where there was a distinct absence of any bridge for many, many years, along the entire 6, 300 kilometre length of the river.

The bridge stretches a whole mile (1.6 kilometres) from Wuchang's Snake Hill, on the Yangtze River's southern bank, all the way across the river to Hanyang's Turtle Hill, on the Yangtze River's northern bank, with initial plans for the construction of the bridge tabled back in 1910.

The actual construction was impeded by the culmination of the Second World War as well as the Chinese Civil War, together with the economic limitations that surrounded such events, so the construction of the bridge would go on to commence in 1955.

Highlights

To get the full experience of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, one should enjoy a ride in both the train as well as the bus, if embarking on a return trip in both directions across the Yangtze River.

The Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge now forms part of three bridges over the Yangtze River, with the other two erected in the form of the Second Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge and the Third Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, but the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge holds all the significance of being the first of these grand bridges and it is worth enjoying the view from above, looking down on the eastward-bound rolling water, with the constant ebb and flow of ships.

The Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge offers a great vantage point to view a number of other attractions that are housed in this area, with the Hubei TV Tower visible on Tortoise Hill as well as the Yellow Crane Tower on Snake Hill.
