Wu Hou Temple
Located at the Wuhou Street of Chengdu City, Wuhou Temple is built for commemorate Zhu ge liang (Kong ming) who is a famous strategist during Three Kingdom period (221-263A.D). It was rebuilt on the same location by Emperor Kangxi in the early Ch'ing Dynasty (1616 ~ 1911A.D.).
Original establishment in 223 A.D and rebuilt in 1672A.D of Qing dynasty, Wuhou temple has covers an area of 37,000 square meters (398,277 square feet).
The main body of the temple are contain five sections, the main gate, the second gate, Liu Bei (Emperor of Shu) Palace, an atrium and Zhuge Liang Palace. The main gate is a stone tablet set up in 809. With 367-centimeter (144-inch) high and 95-centimeter (37-inch) wide, the huge stele is called the Triple- Success Stele. The epigraph on it was composed by Pei Duo, a famous prime minister in the Tang dynasty (618 ~ 907A.D.), then written by a famous calligrapher named Liu Gongquan and finally engraved on the stone by Lu Jian, a well known craftsman. The second gate is Liu Bei Palace. There are the statues of Liu Bei (the emperor), Guan Yu (a general), Zhang Fei(another general) and Liu zhan(the grandson of Emperor Liu Bei). It have more than 40 statues of historical characters and tablets, more than 10 bronze instruments such as bells, stoves, tripods and drums in Liu Bei Palace.
The Wuhou Temple was listed as a national historical site by the government in 1961.
